After several weeks of interrupted body work, my TR6 shell is just about
ready for paint. After having all the body shell-blasted, it looked
pretty smooth. It's surprising how many little dings show up once you
apply primer/surfacer and begin to sand it smooth!
I have agonized over using lacquer vs. the more modern base coat/top coat
systems. My history has been lacquer which is great for the home hobbyist
like myself who is inclined to doing their own spraying. Having a
background in Art, I greatly appreciate the deep color look I get from
lacquer - even with a clear coat. I am put off by the plastic look of the
modern OEM base coat/clear coat systems that seem to stress "shine" over
"color". But alas, I feel that I must give in to the durability of the
base coat/clear system and that fact that lacquer supplies may not be
available after the end of this year. Begrudgingly , I have decided to go
with the 1998 Jaguar Racing Green (thankfully it is nonmetallic) base/clear
coat using PPG paints.
I'm just passing this along to list members who may find themselves in a
similar situation sometime.
