I just bought a brand new TR4 cam from British Parts North West. It's
only $91.00 when they accept your old cam as a trade. The one I ordered
was the model BP200. It's a mild street cam, supposed to boost the horse
power 6-10 HP. The engine will idle at 800 RPM, about 100 over a stock
cam. They encouraged being conservative. I think he said they sell
about 100 cams a year, and only about 4 hotter cams. The packaging was
complete, with detailed instructions, but not a trace of the ORIGIN of
the cam. Something I always look for on all parts.
My decision to purchase the cam was based on the need to replace my
tappets (lifters). They old ones had some hunks missing, and were
noticably dished. So now I'll have new metal lobes running against the
new tappet surfaces.
During this informative talk with BPNW, I found out that the lifters
spin in their bores. They don't just go up and down, and that if you
don't get that run in correctly, you're bound to have trouble in 3,000
miles.
My can bearings are noticably scored, so $18.00 more dollars bought me a
set of those. And the project is stalled until I fabricate the special
Churchill tool. When I prove the tool out, I'll make a couple of
extra.
