Symptoms of valve adjustment are any of the following 
Loud tapping noise. 
Back firing. 
Pour performance. 
You want something to do because your board. 
It's been more than a year since it was last done. 

Symptoms of valves needing grinding are 
All of the above, minus the last year one.
Low compression.

You shouldn't let you valves stay out of adjustment, if they don't close
enough when they're hot, you will soon find your valves have been eaten
away.
