Brian,
The easiest way is to look at the rivet holes. If you have around 1/16 of
an inch between the friction plate and the top of the rivets then the disk
is fairly new, and the closer to the rivets you get the more the clutch is
worn (on both sides). Also look at the thin connecting plates that hold
the clutch material to the center section for any cracks or discoloration.
Also the big springs in the center for broken or loose ones. If any of the
aforementioned are found then time to replace. It's an awful lot of work
to remove and replace for a $50-$60 part -
