Brendan, I did this conversion on my TR4 about 6 years ago. I
used Bob Schaller's directions from his book "More BS About TRs"
(available from the Roadtser Factory) This employs a Ford alternator
and voltage regulator. The cost is about $100 for the bits and the
minor machining required to make the alternator fit your `4's
mounts. I have heard of folks using GM and Bosch aternators with
incorporated voltage regulators but I haven't seen such a set up.
In Schaller's instructions you use the pulley from the stock TR4
generator, along with its fan. The only drawback is that the charge
light will have to disconnected as after the alternator is hooked
up it will remain on all the time. This was not stated in the
directions. I had to call Bob to find it out. Since Bob is no longer
with us, I'm telling you.
