mine does the same thing so i was wondering about too, (cork gasget too 
short to fit in groove on valve cover)

Do I need to soak the cork valve gasket in oil or something before using
it? My shop manual does not mention soaking, but it appears to be a
little short and I thought if I soaked it would swell up and be a better
fit.
