Before we start a war here - let me add my few cents (sense?) When new the
MGB was in the same market niche as the TR4/250/6. In fact, when my '64 TR4
was new I had a room-mate who had a '64 MGB. Both were nice cars and cost
about the same - I prefered the TR4's looks, quality and handling. He
prefered the MGB's looks etc. MG continued to build the MGB for years (making
"improvements") while Triumph moved on to different numbered TR models (also
making "improvements"). Note the quotation marks -they're for whomever thinks
that their model was the ultimate TR. :-).
The Spitfire was not in the same niche as the TR4. It was smaller, had less
power and was lower in price -- it was aimed at a different market - the same
market as the AH Sprite and the MG Midget. I used to refer to the Spitfires
of that time as "my car's kid brother." MG owners felt the same way about the
Midget. I'm not shooting any thing down here - I like Spits (even had a '74
for awhile) but when new they really were more comparable to the Sprite and
the Midget than to the MGB.
Having said all that - I recommend that he get a Spitfire for his purposes.
Cheers.
Art Kelly '64 TR4 CT33118L (original owner/factory pickup - saw my first
Spitfire in London two days after I picked up the TR4 - White '64 Spit driven
by a good-looking South African lass. Amazing how "Hey -my car's kid brother"
broke the ice).
