Trevor Boicey's comment seems to make the most sense... so I guess I lose

He said it was best to build oil pressure with the starter before the
engine starts running, because of the increase in stresses due to
combustion.  Or something like that.

Again, the shove-it isn't worth enough to worry about bearing failures.
So I'm not going to change my habits :-)
