Subject: 64 Herald / Brake drums / Relocating / SUs
When in th UK I owned a very sad '63 Spitfire, which never had
seatbelts fitted. I was always told that the sill / chassis
outriggers were not MOT inspected as the car had no belts - good
thing as they were extremewly rotten. So the chassis repair may not
be needed if you do not have belts or, er, lose them for the MOT.....
Removing brake drums - I've found that plenty of WD40 and tapping w a
hammer will work with persistance. Work around the circumference and
be patient it will come off.
Relocating cars - I brought my 73 Mk 4 Spitfire from the UK with me
when I moved to Texas - the cost of shipping was trivial - the cost
of getting it legal to drive on the road was not. The only source of
information which was accurate was the DoT in Washington. There are
many who claim to know the rules but don't. I'd call the Aussie DoT
equivalent and search for the right person. Might be expensive in
international calls but may save much pain later.
Someone mentioned SU s are liked on Harleys. I think they used 1.5"
SUs as upgrades on older shovelheads as they had Keihin (sp ?) carbs
as standard. I think the current CV style carbs are generally
considered fairly good once rejetted. Some HD parts books still list
SUs for these models.
