I know a couple of guys who race saloons - 

One in town here has a PI in which he has a tickled engine, lowered
suspension (would give you a new definition of 'negative camber')
extractors, etc, etc, lower ratio diff, adjustable shocks etc, etc.

I understand it is reasonably competitive.  Consider that 2.5's came
injected out there, so they can be easily knocked up to TR5/6 PI
figures.
