Spitfire springs have rubber spacers.  You're also supposed to greae the leaves 
with 
high pressure (graphite) grease, though the regular stuff won't kill ya.  When 
I removed 
the original spring from my Spitfire, the spacers were still O-K, but that 
hard-to-find 
center cap pad was chewed to hell because of a missing swing bolt in the bottom.
