This surprises me. Does the TR3 wiper motor have permanent magnet stators?
Wiper motors are usually NOT polarity sensitive since they DON'T have
permanent magnets.

Make this a compulsory step 5 since it seems this IS required to maintain
a good quality spark. It DOES matter which way the spark jumps.

Not before you do step 6: "Flash" the generator. Simple enough to do, but
if you don't do it, there is a good probability that the generator will
not start charging.
