Good evening Franz,

Polarizing the generator [dynamo] in your TR3, or for that matter, any
TR is fairly simple.

The basic procedures are as follows:

Take a suitable length of 14 gauge or similar wire from the HOT terminal
of the battery and flashing it several times against the field (smaller
terminal) of the generator polarizes it. You will just have to decide
if your car will be positive or negative ground. For positive ground,
flash the negative terminal. For negative ground, flash to positive
terminal. All experts recommend that this procedure be done while the
dynamo is physically mounted to you vehicle. However, I have
successfully polarized them on the bench by grounding the dynamo with a
similar gauged wire.

Remember to test the generator before connecting your voltage
regulator:

(1) Connect a voltmeter between the LARGE terminal and ground. Start
engine. A reading of 1.5 to 2.0 volts should be obtained at 1500-2000
RPMs.

(2) Connect ammeter between LARGE and small terminals. Voltmeter still
between LARGE terminal and ground, slowly increase engine speed. When
voltmeter reads 12V ammeter should read 2 amps.

(3) Now you are ready to test the MAX SAFE OUTPUT; Reconnect small and
LARGE leads to your car's harness while the ammeter is still connected
to the LARGE lead. Run Engine and switch on your headlamp. The MAX
SAFE OUTPUT should be 25 or 22 amps depending upon the type of
generator. If output exceeds these amounts, check regulator.

(4) Stop the engine. Ammeter should show momentary discharge of 10
amps max. then returns to zero. If higher or does not return to zero,
check regulator. Your voltage regulator is adjustable, however before
you attempt to make any adjustments to the voltage regulator, complete
the about steps first. This is a procedure for testing the regulator.
If you would like them, I will be happy to email them to you.

Please note: If battery is connect when generator wires are being
installed, then a spark at the LARGE or small lead indicates that the
regulator is defective and should be replaced.

Remember: The commutator end of the generator has a porous bronze bush
and requires a few drops of engine oil every 6,000 miles.

Good luck.
