Leon,
I don't know which Bf109 you saw at Duxford, (I never got there -
it's a
long story), but Black 6 was the aircraft which crashed, which was
significant for
being the only flyable 109 with the original Daimler Benz DB605 engine
fitted. ALL
of the other flying 109s are post war Spanish built "Buchon" variants, most
being
powered by RR Merlin engines, though I believe there is one which has been
"retro-fitted" with the correct engine. The RR engined aircraft have a
totally
different frontal look because the cowlings were changed to accomodate the
upright
V12 of the Merlin - the DB605 was an inverted Vee.
Even more significantly, Black 6 "was" the only airworthy WW2
Luftwaffe
aircraft anywhere in the world!
Sorry to be such a trainspotter, but you know what I'm like with
Heralds,
Cheers,
Bill.
Thanx Bill,that' s interesting,Well I must admit that (1) I'm not a 'train'
or aircraft spotter these days,so I didn't look too closely at the Bf109 that
was flying at Duxford,on that day,(perhaps if I had know it was going to
crash the following weekend,I might have looked more closely!),however last
time I went to Duxford in Oct 94,I took a photo of a Bf109 with its's RR
engine clearly showing,so this time I assumed that the one flying,(and the
one that crashed),to be the same aircarft.
It also sounded like a RR engine to me,but then again, perhaps I can't tell
the difference between the engine notes of the RR and the Daimler Benz
engines,although I'll bet you can!
Did you see the rest of the mail to which I was responding?
Whatever,it was a shame...
Leon
