These additives contain 'seal swell agents' which (surprise, surprise)
cause seals to swell. This will tend to reduce leakage from worn seals
and small amounts of these substances are commonly part of the normal
formulation of automotive oils. Main problem is that the swollen seals
may wear more (since the swelling increases the pressure against
whatever they're sealing) and if you do not put the additive in with
each oil change and topup, the seals will shrink again leaving a worse
leak than you started with.
