Actually, the engineers at Triumph beat me to it. If your transmission
inhibitor switches are wired correctly, and are functioning as they should,
the O/D solenoid disengages in reverse. It also disengages in 1st on the
earlier models, and in both 1st and 2nd on the later models.
That would be a good use for the O/D indicator light, if it is wired to
indicate when the solenoid is actually energized. If the inhibit switch
should fail in a way to allow O/D operation in reverse, the light wouild come
on to warn you.
In fact, it would be easy enough to wire a buzzer to sound if the car is ever
in O/D and, because of inhibit switch failure, also in reverse. Any one
interested in the details - wiring diagram, etc?
