Chad Jester asked about sloppy steering in his new TR6 and Mark LePore
suggested worn steering rack or front end stuff. I suggest Chad take a look
at
something else too-the clamp that keeps the collapsible steering column outer
tube (upper end) tight to the center rod (lower end). When I bought my GT6
it
had no clamp at all and I drove it for months that way. The only thing
keeping
the steering wheel connected to the rack was friction in the tube. I finally
caught
on when I noticed the steering wheel spokes kept changing positions at
straight
ahead driving.
The clamp (and I think all the Triumphs of this period used the same setup)
is on
the column a couple of inches up from where it penetrates the floor above the
pedals. There are flat spots on the inner rod and outer tube and the clamp
holds
them tight from turning, but allows the two to slide (collapse) in the case
of an
accident, thereby saving your chest from a TR shield horn button impression.
I think TRF carries the part if it's missing, or you car make one yourself
like I did
(TRF wasn't around in '76).
