Hi,

Your grinding can be one of the following:

1. bad synchro in 2nd. you have to take the gearbox apart to fix this.

2. bad top-hat bushing. you have to take the gearbox down to fix this.

3. the main shaft is ruined in relation to 2 above. This is obviously a 
tear-down issue.

You can keep driving it as-is, but the longer you drive on it, the more 
$$$ it'll cost to fix! Drain the fluid and look for:

1. clean - no probs, keep driving. This is unlikely if you're grinding gears.
2. golden metallic look - synchros or thrust washers going bad. Get out 
the Mastercard and call Charles Runyan.
3. grey-ish look - oh-oh. This is gears or the layshaft or the mainshaft 
or the bearings. Get out the Gold Mastercard....

Good luck!

This is a good reason to have a working spare TRansmission around! With 
one of those, you install it and fix the bad one when you have time.
