Ted:
I for one would doubt that this baulky sychro will spell the end of your
gearbox, providing you drive it accordingly. You should adjust your
driving habits to avoid such clashes, like avoiding downshifting to slow
down. This, after all IS what brakes are for. If you don't already drive
like this, when approaching a light just take it out of gear and use the
brakes. If you must change down to 2nd before turning a corner, where
you're downshifting because you need a lower gear, take a moment after you
pull the lever out of 3rd and into the nuetral slot to blip the throttle
before slipping the lever into 2nd. A few times with this, and you'll
learn how high and how fast to rev the motor for the speed you're going to
allow the gearchange to be made with a minimum of grinding. You also need
to double-clutch. This took me some time to learn, but now I do it without
thinking. Push the clutch in to remove the lever from third, then let it
out as the lever passes thru nuetral, blip the throttle, then push the
clutch back in to enter 2nd, get this right, and you don't need synchros.
And, after a while you can do this as quickly as a normal downshift.
Sounds pretty cool, too!!:^) By doing this you're doing the synchro's job
for it. The rest of the 'box might still be pretty sound, but start
planning for a thorough rebuild, including all synchros, bearing and
bushings. Can't remember how much it cost me... a lot cheaper though, than
having someone else do it, and you learn a lot, too!
The overdrive would be nice, but you'd have to do some wiring changes, too.
Still doable, though if you like electrical stuff... I don't!!
