I had this same problem with my '69 when I first bought it. My manual
says to set the timing with all the vaccuum advance and retard lines
disconnected, so I did that. I set the timing and got a steady reading
out of it. When I took it up the road, it was still sluggish and
missing horribly. Just out of curiosity I stuck the light back on it
and looked at the mark with all the vaccuum lines in place. The mark
was dancing around on the balancer! Does anyone know if this is normal?
I figured it wasn't, so I went to check all the vaccuum lines for leaks.
I found my leak... It seems that strange little valve on the throttle
linkage that is only common to the '69 was missing from my car! In its
place, the DPO had placed a chunk of LEAKING hose patching it directly
into the intake manifold. When I plugged it off, the timing went to
normal although my idle speed was wacked... Anyway, what I am getting at
is *Check that valve!* I'm sure yours is not missing like mine, but if
the valve would leak or stick, the timing would go insane!

Oh yeah... Anyone know where to get one of those strange little valves??
I can't seem to locate one.. Thanx! --Geoff
