I've been rebuilding the brake and clutch master cylinder on my '63 TR4 and
not sure if the spring within the piston should be sufficient to return the
piston back to its neutral position. I've used the grease supplied with the
master cylinder kit, checked for pitting or any other signs of wear. The
cylinders are very smooth, I cleaned them with brake cleaner and scrubbed them
with a fine 3M pad. When re-assembled the clutch piston moves in and out
smoothly, however, the brake piston moves in but won't return without some
banging it on the workbench. Is this OK? Will the pressure within the
installed system cause the piston to return? The piston without the rubber
moves freely within the cylinder so I don't feel that reaming it out is the
answer. Possibly I need a new spring?

thanks, Dave.
