Yeah...Been there Done That.  Thrice.  Yes, there is an easy way way, but it
hardly ever works.  Pull release cable full travel.  Have someone else put
"up" pressure on bonnet.  IF you're Lucky, it works.  Don't put too much
pressure when pulling bonnet.

Two hard ways.  There is a grommet that the choke cable and heater valve go
thru behind the glovebox.  Remove Glovebox, pull out grommmet and start
fishing with a bent clothes-hanger.  You may need someone else to put "up"
pressure on bonnet when you've got the release lever pulled.  If this
doesn't work, try under the car with a bent small diameter rod up past the
manifolds.  Its easiest if you jack the car up for more room and light, but
you'll again need someone else to put up pressure on bonnet.

Yes, it does.  A lot of people will rig auxillary pull cables on their cars.
