The synthetic gear oil is available in GL-4 and GL-5 specs. According to
the information I got from Mobil, they would recommend GL-4 if the
gearbox is equipped with an overdrive. This is due to concern that the
GL-5 high-pressure additives may cause slippage of the O/D cone clutch. 

Without an O/D, you can use either. At least assuming your car is 1960
or newer. 

(There *may* be materials in some 50s and earlier boxes that *may*
conflict with GL-5 - I really don't have any accurate information).
