I've been looking for a decent TR6 or 250 for about 3 months now. I've had
the opportunity to look at a few and have been really suprised by what is
out there.
Two examples:
Looked at a car which had been listed to $13000 (won't say what model).
While looking at it the owner told the story of how he had peeled the
stickers off a Die-Hard battery and put stickers from an old Lucas battery
on. I'm thinking "this is an honest person?" He then told me that the he
would replace the redlines with blackwall tires because the redlines had dry
rot. The tires looked and handled well during the test drive, and had no
cracks in the sidewalls or tread. He did mention that he had four sets of
redlines on back order. The muffler system was pretty well shot, the
speedometer didn't work and some of the molding was off the car. There were
a couple of other things I don't remember.
Had to travel 7 hours round trip to look at the second car. It was listed at
just over $10,000 with all kinds of new stuff. Conversation on phone with
owner resulted in no answers which would indicate that anything was wrong
with car. At first sight the car looked great. Owner said frame had been
completely redone and showed me pictures of the process. When I looked
under the car there was a 8" hole in the frame. the rest did look pretty
good. Thought this might be just the car for me. Looked farther, exhaust
would need replacing soon, clutch needed work, redlines had cracks in the
sidewalls and in the tread, the floor under the spare tire was so rusted
that I could have easily poked my finger through it and there were a few
other things. It was advertised as a frame-off restoration and I guessed I
assumed that meant a rebuilt engine. I learned that it doesn't.
Thank you for listening to me vent.
Someday I will find the car I've been looking for.
