If the splines are in good condition, they will have a rectangular cross
section. Over time, with rust, corrosion, etc, the splines will take a
triangular shape. If this is severe, the spline have very little holding
power, and can slip under heavy loads. If this happens under braking, the
wheels have a very annoying tendency to unscrew and come off the car. Not a
pretty scene!
