What threw me here was 'no thermostat'. I guess this should read "no original
skirted thermostat".  That part I understand, bypass and all.

The question is, what to do, thermostat, no thermostat, block bypass, leave
it open when 'thermostat'  means = non-original, non-skirted, aftermarket
thermostat.  This is relevant, I believe, since the skirted thermostats are
pretty much not available.  Understanding how the  cooling system was
designed to work is one thing, but given the original design cannot be
adhered to, e.g. does not include the thermostat designed for the system ,
we're faced with essentially redesigning the system for most efficient
cooling/heating of the engine over a wide range of temperatures.

For the rest of this discussion here 'thermostat' means aftermarket unit, no
skirt.
Bob Schaller, past TRA tech advisor and long time TR guy, reccommended the
bypass blocked theory, assuming an aftermarket thermostat installed, along
with recoring the radiator and an electric fan .  He lived in Phoenix and
this system kept him cool and did not cause any other problems.  He also made
lots of long distance runs across country.

I followed this advice when I had cooling problems here in sunny New Mexico
and have had cool running since.  I run a 180 thermostat, bought by the way
at the local Pep Boys !  Had the radiator recored with a more efficient,
modern Modine core  and went for the electric fan pushing in front of the
radiator.  The bypass is blocked .  This car has carried me through Needles
California and the Mojave Desert several times.  I took it over the Colorado
mountain passes to the Steamboat Springs Vintage Race last fall, climbing
some 5,000 feet in less than an hour. I also run the car routinely in summer
city traffic with no problems.

There was mention, at one point, of posible 'hot spots' on the head with the
bypass blocked due.  Any thought about that?  I haven't had any problems with
head gaskets, etc.
