The front bumper on my 74 Spitfire (1500), originally a Calif. car, has the
rubber under-riders. I would like to swap these out for MK3 chrome
under-riders, but looking at various pictures this doesn't appear possible.
Again, looking at various pictures of MK4's and 1500's, it appears that
there are several different versions of the rubber under-riders from 74 to
78. One version has a rather long (vertically) squared off front which
does not protrude past the center point of the bumper. Mine, on the other
hand, are more triangular shaped, protrude about 6.5" past the point on the
bumper where they are attached (which puts them well forward of the center
point of the bumper) and have a squared off front end that is only 2.5"
long (vertically. Moreover, the VB catalog lists 3 different versions of
these rubber under-riders. One for the 74's, one for 71-78 and yet another
for 75-78.
Is it possible, without major modification to the frame, panels etc., to
replace my rubber under-riders with the MK3 chrome ones? If not, are there
other options?
I want to do this for two reasons. First, the aesthetics (at least to me)
and second, if I can reduce the length of the car by a few more inches I
can get my golf cart in the garage behind the car (I've already taken the
rear over-riders off.
