Valve Numbering On Spitfire

I want to check and adjust the valve clearance on my 74 Spitfire.  The
manual refers to a valve(s) numbering sequence, but doesn't explain which
valves are what number. For example, it says to "Adjust Nos. 5 and 2 valves
with Nos. 4 and 7 valves open".

How are these valves and their respective numbers identified?  Which ones
are the intake valves and which ones are the exhaust valves?  Also, can the
engine be turned over by hand when the plugs are removed, if so, do you use
something on the crankcase nut to turn it?
