Kevin,
I have found the most common cause of backfiring through the carb(s) to
be low fuel level in the float bowls. If you think about it, don't most
cars backfire through the carb(s) as they run out of gas? Hence that
distinctive sound that even Hollywood knows well. Check the fuel delivery
and float levels carefully.
On down-draft carbs if you ever get a carb fire (inside the throat of
the
carb) from a backfire it almost always is due to a near empty float bowl.
Haven't seen this on side-drafts yet.
Good Luck,
Clay Scott

Subject: 79 Spitting fire - backfiring
Great! Right after I brag about my wife rebuilding the carb, I get the
spit
running and it starts backfiring. It idles fine, but when I accelerate
quickly, it "spits" out of the carburetor. Is this normal and implied by
the
name? :)
I can only think that it will backfire (out the carb) upon pre-ignition.
I
will
check the timing as soon as possible. I've adjusted the mixture in haste,
with no success.
Any help that would fix it and save me from buying a Weber book is
appreciated.
Thanks,
Kevin
