Subject: Volvo trany to replace TR4A trany
I've been lurking for a year now, saving pertinent info and buying parts.
Finally I have some time to attend to the TR. I've had my Tr4A since grade
12 (1975) and until recently, treated it like a toy. I never liked the slow
shifting transmission and being young, refused to shift at a rate conducive
to long syncro & gear life. I had 3rd gear rebuilt twice before trading a
partially stripped wreck for a "new" rebuilt trany in '82. It lasted about 3
years before starting to jump out of 3rd under load. Now I have to hold it
in gear unless coasting.
Question 1 - I had heard that a volvo trany of the same vintage would bolt
into the TR4A bell housing with only minor modifications. Something about
the same factory making both transmissions? I assume the Volvo model would
be PV544 or B18. I was going to pull mine out and take it to a wrecker or
two and see if I could spot the correct Volvo trany but it would be easier
if someone could tell me what I'm looking for. Maybe I just drank too much
in my younger days and talked to too many bar room experts, eh?
Question 2 - My car is registered as a 1968 TR4A (CT67907) so I've always
wondered if it was one of the last TR4As built and shipped too late to
qualify or be registered as a '67. Anyone know what the last commission
number is?
