All the talk of cramming big motors gets away from the point of increasing
the performance without decreasing the civility of the car. I'll be the
first to say that a rat motor in a Herald would be cool, but I'd also be
glad that it was someone else's car. What about looking for a larger
displacement 4 cylinder engine? Things that come to mind are Ford Pinto
(Kent motor), Datsun 1.8 liter (from a 510), Toyota 20R, Volvo 2.1 liter
(with injection !). These are all from RWD chassis, so the gearbox could
follow the engine.
Here's a wild hybrid: Get an old Super Vee or FAtlantic car and stick the
whole motor and transaxle in the back of a Herald Estate! Wow! A BDA in the
back seat!
