 Turning theheadlights off (still driving) causes the temp. gauge to return
to 
the N-position 

Peter,

I'm not sure about Spitfires but my TR6 had the same problem that also
included an obvious voltage drop on the meter when the lights were turned on.
 If your's is so equipped, make sure that the negative battery cable is
grounded to both the engine AND the body of the car at the appropriate places
on the cable.  13+ volts all the time after that little discovery.
