Pete,

There is a site on the web with an article entitled "More than you ever
wanted to know about motor oils".  It is tittled correctly.  The first
page shows a chart which shows 80-90 gear oil comparable to 20-50 grade
motor oil.

The article discussed zinc and other high pressure lube additives with
respect to motorcycles many of which use a common oil/gearbox sump. 
Check it out.  It is a great article.
