Dan,
Thanks for your comments. Just out of curiosity, how much did it cost to have
your gages rebuilt? Who did it for you? Was it local or did you need to ship
the gages (I am in Ann Arbor, MI). Thanks again!

Carel,
I am finishing the rebuild of a 71 Stag. I had similar problems with
both of my gauges and I sent them out to be rebuilt. I belive the guy
said that the gears in the speedo were bad and he replaced them.
Whatever he did the speedo works fine now. The tach bounced all over the
place and tended to read high, above roughly 2500 RPM it would be pegged.
The rebuilder said he bench tested the tach and it was fine. I spent a
fair amount of time going through all of the wiring and the aftermarket
Lumenition ignition system, but couldn't find anything wrong. After a
lot of frustration I talked to another rebuilder who asked to bench test
the tach. He said some of the circuitry was burned out and replaced the
bad stuff. The tach now works fine also. Hope this offers you some
insight.
