You're welcome, but I may turn out to be wrong about the later engines
(more often the case than not <g>). But the one I'm working on little by
little is from a `70 GT6+. It is possible that some improvements (such
as nitriding) were incorporated into the later engines, but I would still
wonder.... The crank out of the car I mention above surprised me, since
I expected it to have at least hardened journals, but they were not.

This was one of those cars with convenient odometer failure, but I'd
guess from the dates of the repair tickets scattered in the back that it
had 115-130k miles on it. The engine showed no signs of any previous
rebuild, and the crank had very little wear. I miked the whole crank and
found a couple of rod journals out-of-round in the neighborhood of
0.002-3", and I would hardly think that figure excessive with unhardened
surfaces.

Now, if you'd been talking about an air-cooled VW crank, that would be
another matter... they were induction-hardened to about 0.040-0.050" and
were just plain hard as hell. No mistaking what was done there. <g>
Cheers.
