I did some more work on the GT today, basically involved removing more
stuff...I'm stripping the car down to a shell, and I plan on eventually
removing it from the chassis and having the chassis powdercoated if
possible.
I little depressed over the amount of rust I discovered. Being a
Northern California car I would have thought otherwise, but when that
battery tray starts leaking and it's left like that for 20 years it can do
a lot of damage to the sill and floorpan. It seems like I'm going to need
to replace the entire right side lower four or five inches of the
car...outer sill, A post, floor etc...There was a lot of rust where the
stainless steel strip was attached to the bottom.
But, I'm going to do it right...it is a little tempting to just
fiberglass everything over and get it on the road, but my Spit is running
great so I do have one LBC for now...I plan on doing the bodywork myself to
save money. What would people suggest I weld with MIG or Gas? It's all
non-structural cosmetics, but I have no experience welding at all.
Suggestions?
Now, I've started compiling some parts I need, and figured I'd try the list
first to see if anyone had some of this stuff, before I commit to buying
new.
Right Outer Sill
Right Front floor pan
Right rear quarter panel patch
Carpet Set
Front Grille for the bonnet
Battery Tray (LHD)
Basically anything else for a GT6 as this car is going to need EVERYTHING
replaced, cleaned, restored, polished etc......So if you have some parts
laying around let me know what you have and what you'd like for them.
I'd like to get this car together fairly quick as my wife and I are looking
at the possibility of moving to Europe in the next 6-12 months, either
England or Germany, with my wife going into the Air Force, possibly me too!
Thanks alot, and sorry this is so long!
