Concerning you problem with SU's, it sounds like a float problem. I had a
similar problem with a TR-3 after I installed an electric fuel pump; the pump
generated too much pressure, and the float valve couldn't hold it back. I
ended up solving the problem with an in-line pressure regulator.
The mechanical fuel pump has a built-in regulator / bypass, so it shouldn't
over-pressurise the lines, but I suppose the bypass could be stuck. With the
TR-3, the float over-flow was routed onto the exhaust manifold. Kinda
scary...
