Oil Pressure Gauge Washer - '72 TR6

Hi all,

I started to refinish my dash this weekend (I have a couple of coats
of Spar Urethane on already, looks great!).  

But,  what would a project be without one or two curves?  The leather washer on 
the oil pressure pipe disintegrated upon removal.  Do I dare use gasket 
material, or
is the leather washer the only approved solution?
