Well, fellow SOL'ers, now that the rear suspension job has been completed
successfully (tight as a drum I might add -- handles beautifully except for
the squeaking of the new trailing arm bushings which I can live with) I'm
starting to think of the differential. Actually, it's not difficult for me
to think of the diff as it's so darn noisy! Between the clunking and the
whining above 40 mph it's a bit of a distraction at the best of times.
After last year's adventure I'm not inclined to purchase a used or
home-rebuilt one (having the crown and pinion gears disentegrate at 60 mph
is an unpleasant experience) which leaves me with a choice: a) rebuild it
myself or b) get it done professionally. Option b) is far too costly so I
find myself considering a). Questions are:
1) Should I be prepared to disassemble the entire unit or can my problems
be solved by adjusting and shimming?
2) Does it sound like I'm in for replacing crown and pinion gears, in
which case it just became too expensive?
3) Am I crazy to even think about doing this myself?
As usual, any and all opinions and advice are welcomed by the management.
