Last fall I also replaced the trailing arm bushings on my TR6. The new ones
are the heavy-duty grade from TRF. The threaded rod method got three of four
old bushings out, but the last one wouldn't budge. Wound-up using a
hydraulic press.
As for installing the new HD bushings, the threaded-rod method didn't work
for me. These uprated bushings are very hard and must be compressed when
fitted. The solution was to make an adaptor out of some iron piping. The
adaptor has a tapered bore that pre-compresses the bushing before it slides
into the trailing arm. Lubricating the adaptor and the trailing arm hole
with silicon grease, the new bushings slid into place with remarkable ease
(using an arbor press).
After having the car properly aligned, I autocrossed the car last weekend.
The improvement was well worth the effort. In addtion to new urethane
bushings on the front, the car has a tight, "new" feel to it.
Hope this information can be of some use.
