All,
Berry Kercheval and others have commented on carpet installation. Yes, TRF
(and other vendors) have the correct snaps, male and female parts. TRF also
has an "instruction sheet" for carpet installation. I purchased the "carpet
installation kit" (glue, snaps, screws, cup washers, etc) when installing the
carpet kit for our '3. The "instruction sheet" TRF sent me is for the TR6 and
lists the "correct" placement of the snaps. NO GLUE on the floorboards, tranny
tunnel, etc.
Some hints to make the learning curve less steep:
1. Install male snap to floorboard, tranny tunnel, etc. first. Snap
"pronged" female part onto the installed male part. (Yes, the female part is
now upside down.) Place carpet and push "prongs" through the carpet. Now push
another "pronged" female part into carpet from the top and install the bottom
of the female part. Remove first female part from the installed male part.
Alignment will be perfect.
2. To cut holes in carpet for the seat rail bolts, find an old 1/4" nut
driver. Dremel the inner surface to make a punch. Two solid blows with a
hammer (or just one blow with a BFH) will cut a clean hole. You need to remove
underfelt and carpet from the inside of your "punch" each time or it will "load
up". OK, so the holes are under the seat rails...no one will see.
3. Do not cut any holes or place any snaps in a carpet piece until you
are actually placing that particular piece. For example, if you cut/punch the
seat rail bolt holes before you've placed the propshaft cover carpet piece, you
have erred.
4. If using underfelt, use "red paper" (like construction paper on a 36"
wide roll) to make templates of the actual size you need/want the underfelt.
About 1/4" to 1/2" less than the carpet pieces on all sizes. Also, place the
paper template on the tranny and propshaft tunnel covers so and cut the
template to be "flush" with the floorboard. Once you've all the templates,
then place these on your underfelt (and trace) to maximize the number of pieces
you can fit. If using templates, mark up/down or carpet side/car side. This
is helpful if using a heat shield as the foil is installed next to the car
(away from the carpet).
5. Use a heatshield. It makes a LOT of difference.
