Subject: Say what?

I know I am sort of slow sometimes, but WHY in the world would
anyone want to take two perfectly good Weber throats and force
them to feed only a single inlet port? Wouldn't you lose a lot
of power and waste a lot of petrol by getting poor gas speed and
lousy fuel atomization through the two throats?

Good question, Mark. Here's the answer:

1) Can't find a Mk I 8 port head for my 1147 cc motor.
2) Don't have the money for a Mk III motor & head combo right
now.
3) Have access to a pair of 40 DCOEs on a "trial" basis from a
friend who may later sell them to me CHEAP.
4) I plan to flow port the Mk I head extensively (I have a spare
now).
5) Love to tinker w/ cars and try "interesting" things (and yes,
I agree, this will be pretty wierd).
6) By Gawd, it may work better than the stock set up!
7) It may not work better, but all I would be out is some
aluminum and some time, and I can easily restore the original set
up w/o damage.
8) It's fun to fool around with a welding machine and a pair of
polished aluminum intake runners would look neat (not original, of
course, just neat).
9) To boldly go where no man has gone before.

So, yes, I've thought about how silly this all seems. And it is
entirely possible that after a couple of hours of farting around
with my friend and his welder I'll realize how futile and
ridiculous the whole idea is. Nevertheless, I am somewhat
stubborn and I've tried even dumber sounding ideas before (tried
to build a barstool racer once with a 200cc Yamaha motor in the
base -- ohmyGod was it fast but jeeez was it scary!). Anyways, if
it doesn't work I'll send up a "white flag" on the Net signifying
my surrender and will be the first to admit it was a dumb idea.

[MJB says: Lots of good reasons, but you can accomplish them all by making
a manifold for single carb, and actually *improve* performance
            at the same time! ]
