Vince, I believe the chassis was painted the original body color at the factory. I bought my 68 Spitfire in 1969. The chassis is white, the body color. Many owners use black in restorations as it is easier than trying to find the correct color. Hope this helps. Maybe others can confirm or correct this for your year. Larry C.
