Having been on these lists for about 18 months now and having read
about all manner of horrors which have not *yet* plagued my TR6, I
have some questions to all and sundry:

1) What sort of gas mileage should I expect for a '76 TR6? I'm
getting about 20 mpg (imperial gallons) on the highway.

2) I keep hearing about blown clutches... is this chronic and should
I expect it every 30,000 miles?

3) If the rear lever-arm shocks are soft must they be replaced or is
it just a matter of refreshing the oil? I haven't seen any
    obvious leaks anywhere.

4) J-type overdrive (I am starting to *hate* this thing with a
passion). It's not working. I've removed, checked, adjusted and
re-installed the solenoid. When I turn it on, while cruising in
4th around 3,000 rpm, I get a vibration in the driveline (only
when the drivetrain is cold) and nothing else. When the driveline
is warmed up nothing happens at all. The local britcar specialist
is trying to sell me on a rebuild, saying the clutches are toast.
The question is, should I spend time pulling the pressure relief
valve, sump screen, etc and clean everything, replace the oil,
etc, or is that a waste of time because the clutches are
definitely toast? Anyone have similar experience with this O/D?

5) Last question. I'm getting a 'whining' sound from the gearbox in
3rd and 4th when I'm above 2,500 rpm and I 'feather' the throttle
(like when you're maintaining speed on a downgrade). This whine
has a metallic 'echo' to it which leads me to believe it's coming
from the gearbox, not the aforementioned O/D (the case is bigger,
thus the echo). This noise has been with me since I bought the
car, about 3,000 miles ago, and hasn't changed. The PO told me
the engine and gearbox had been rebuilt and, by her estimation,
they should have less than 15,000 miles on them. Should I figure
on rebuilding the gearbox this winter?

Many thanks for any and all replies!
