I live in Tucson as well, (112 degrees in the shade right now,
guys) I don't have this particular problem with my Spitfire.
Over time your heater valve control cable has probably shifted
enough to where it's not closing the valve properly. Disconnect
the control cable, close the valve by hand, adjust the control
lever on the dash so that it's slightly open, then tighten the
cable down. This will help insure that the valve is fully closed
when the lever is in the closed position.

Failing that, for the duration of this unbelievably hot summer you can
simply reroute the hoses to bypass the heater. Recommend you flush and
cap off the heater so that you don't get crud in there.

Another possibility is that your trans tunnel cover is not
sealing well against the bulkhead, or that laughable excuse for
insulation has fallen out of the tunnel cover; either way you'd
be getting engine compartment heat, not heater heat. Next time
you have an excuse to take the cover off, make your own
insulation for it. It isn't hard to improve on the factory here.
