Often it is not necessary to remove the exhuast system in order to drop the
rear suspension. I've never had to drop the exhaust on mine, but it's a
custom job. I've heard some list members claim that it was not even
necessary to drop the stock exhaust, but others have gone ahead and removed
it. I'd suggest giving it a try with the exhaust in place. The difficulty
of removing the exhaust is primarily a function of its age and the amount of
rust on it. The less rust, the better.

Not likely. Your trailing arms are cast aluminum--they don't rust. Perhaps
there's rust at the trailing arm mounts?

By itself, Waxoil is not a good rust preventative. For best results, you
ought to strip the frame, remove all rust, apply a high-quality undercoat
and paint, and *then* apply waxoil. I'm not talking about removing the body
from the frame--you just need to get under there with a strong detergent or
similar cleanser and use a scrub brush. Get all the oil and grime off that
way, and then grind/sand away rust, finishing with a chemical treatment and
then rinsing. This is obviously a tedious job, but the alternative is to
just let the rust have its way. Simply applying waxoil will provide no
significant protection against future rust, and will have no affect on
existing rust.
Good luck,
