I find myself in much the same position, although my sound is very much like a
"click" rather than a "clunk."  I looked really well underneath the car, but
couldn't find anything.  Yes, I put the car way up on jackstands (the 2
ton-type, if you really need to know), went under there with my 200W lamp, and
looked, probed, pulled, twisted, and bonked.  I didn't find more than 1/16" of
play in any of the U-joints, or on the diff mounts.  On the other hand, it's
pretty hard, even with all I did, to *see* the diff mounts.

Any other suggestions?  Anybody with more experience in New England want to
visit and take a look?

PS:  I don't know what it is, but I get a little unsettled while being under
the rear end of the TR6 in a way that I never do under the engine...  Anybody
else notice this wierd kind of claustrophobia?
