It sounds like a ground strap possibly grounding the fuel tank. I know
my '73 doesn't have anything like this, but i can check the parts book
tonight. Can you tell where the cable attaches at the rear of the car?

It may also be some bodge by a PO. Where does it attach at each end?
I mean exactly, I take it that it attaches to some bolt on the bell
housing at the front, but near the bottom?

Rich may be on the right track, but this strap is usually only about
a foot or so in length. (At least on the U.S. Spec cars.)
