Well, I got back under the Spit this weekend and found that the
"clunk" was not differential, but was from the annual ritual U-Joint
sacrifice. I missed it two weeks ago. One cup had no roller pins left!
Fortunately, my son had given me a replacement U-Joint when I bought
the car ("Here Dad, I know you'll need one of these soon!"). After
replacement, all is smooth again!
While I was under there, I ran backlash measurements as follows:
1. With the gearshift in neutral and parking break engaged. The
rotational play measured at the Differential input flange measured
.3" "lock to lock".
2. With the gearshift in first gear and the parking break disengaged,
the rotational play at the Differential input flange measured .14"
"lock to lock".
This equates to approximately 10 degrees of total play in the
differential and about 5 degrees total play in the transmission gears.
Does anyone have any interpretation of these results? I cannot find
any specifications in my manuals, although maybe the Bentley Manual has
some figures. Anybody Know?
Thanks, John Pratchios
