Years ago, when I got a mini starter for my Tiger, I found the exact same t=
hing =96 the parts place had a pair of starters on the shelf where one was =
marked as being for a manual and the other for an automatic transmission. I=
t was the A/T part that had the correct Bendix engagement (to match the Tig=
er starter).

Exactly. When I did this work on my Tiger several decades ago I ran th=
e starter drive gear around my new flywheel ring gear by hand and it stop i=
n less than 1 revelation of the drive gear. I got a new starter drive gear=
and it work perfectly.
It is imperative that anyone working on these parts to be aware of the prob=
lems and check everything for fit and function or you will be redoing your =
work over and over again.
Most of us don't understand the difference between the 160 and 157 tooth ri=
ng gears. Even worse is that fact that you generally have to order the A/T=
starter to work on the Tiger engine.
My goal is to sort this out some.

Ron- it is imperative you match the ring gear to correct starter bendix. A =
parts store without an older employee that is aware of the 157 and 160 toot=
h flywheel ring gear will sell you whatever starter that will bolt up. Unfo=
rtunately it is easy to install a new flywheel but pulling the engine isn't=
as easy as changing a ring gear. May well be to late for your ring gear bu=
t it is easy to change out the bendix so "others" can make sure they have a=
bendix that matches their ring gear.

I found a comment which makes sense to me.
Flywheel ring gear was changed from 160 to 157 teeth to improve starter gea=
r engagement.
Ring gear OD =3D 13.258" circumference =3D 41.65"
41.65"/ 160 =3D .26"
41.65" / 157 =3D .2653"
Maybe this is why my 160 tooth original ring gear was all chewed up.
I have not found a date when Ford made this change to 157 teeth.
